CAREERS
We choose to use people, not machines, to craft our joinery.
As a member of our shop team, your job starts with an education in age old joinery techniques that utilize hand-cut mortise and tenon connection joints. You’ll start with responsibly sourced timbers, which you’ll cut to length based on drawings by our design department.
Shaping joinery out of a full timber is a process of reduction. Beginning with the biggest saw in the shop, you’ll gradually work the timbers down, progressing from power saws and drills to simple hand chisels, mallets, planers, and knives.
Grab a sledge hammer and some pipe clamps: your job isn’t done until you test fit everything.
THE JOB
- Measure and cut large timbers with handheld circular saws
- Chisel precise mortise and tenon joints
- Arrange timbers in your workspace using a small forklift
- Test fit your timbers by assembling them in sections using clamps
- Help us create homes rooted in nature and in centuries of craftsmanship
QUALIFICATIONS
Details are important, but can you swing a sledge hammer?
This is an on-your-feet-all-day kinda job. Experience is not necessary but comfort using basic carpentry tools would be helpful. Also:
• good listener and learner
• proficient using a tape measure
• strength and mobility
You don’t need superhuman strength, but this is PHYSICAL work.
We’re not over here making jewelry.
THE WORKSPACE
You’ll find some cool things around the shop.
These timbers were reclaimed from a building in New York City. They started their life as a tree in the 1450s.
That’s before Columbus came to America.
Our timber craftsmen share a lifestyle.
They work hard. They smell like pine.
And they build lots of Christmas presents each year.
